Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sprouting jar kit?

A sprouting jar kit gives you the equipment and seeds needed to grow edible sprouts at home. That Leaf's kit includes a glass jar, stainless steel mesh sprouting lid, your choice of seeds and growing instructions.

Is growing sprouts at home difficult?

No. Sprouting is a simple form of home growing that doesn't require soil or a garden. Once the seeds have been soaked, they generally just need regular rinsing and draining while they grow.

How long does it take to grow sprouts in a jar?

Most varieties are ready within several days. Exact growing times vary between broccoli, pea and pink radish, so follow the instructions included with your kit.

Which seeds should I choose?

Choose Broccoli for a mild flavour, Pea for something fresh and sweet, or Pink Radish for a peppery bite. All three are suitable for growing in your That Leaf sprouting jar.

How often should I rinse my sprouts?

Generally, sprouts should be thoroughly rinsed and drained 2–3 times each day. Follow the instructions for your chosen seed variety for the best results.

Do I need soil to grow sprouts?

No. Sprouts are grown using water rather than soil, making a sprouting jar an easy way to grow fresh food without a garden.

Can I reuse the sprouting jar?

Yes. The glass jar and stainless steel mesh lid are reusable. Wash them thoroughly between batches and simply restock your favourite sprouting seeds when needed.

Start with one jar, choose your seeds and make growing fresh food at home part of your everyday routine.

Using approximately 15 to 20 g per batch, one 90 g packet will grow at least 4 full jars of fresh broccoli sprouts.

Yes. Soak your broccoli seeds in cool water for approximately 8 to 12 hours before draining and beginning your regular rinse and drain routine.

Broccoli sprouts are usually ready in around 3 to 6 days. Growing time can vary depending on temperature and growing conditions.

Glucoraphanin is a naturally occurring plant compound found in broccoli and particularly concentrated in young broccoli sprouts. When broccoli sprouts are chewed or chopped, an enzyme called myrosinase helps convert glucoraphanin into another plant compound called sulforaphane. This is one of the reasons broccoli sprouts have become such an interesting area of nutrition research.

Yes. These seeds are suitable for both sprouting and growing as microgreens. Sow them into a tray with growing medium and allow them to continue growing beyond the sprout stage until the young microgreens are ready to harvest. They can also be grown using the That Leaf Microgreens Grow Kit.

Once your broccoli sprouts are ready, keep them refrigerated at 5°C or below. At That Leaf, we keep our sprouts in the sprouting jar with the mesh lid rather than sealing them in an airtight container. While they're in the fridge, rinse and drain them thoroughly once a day and return them to the fridge. Always use clean hands and equipment, rinse thoroughly and discard sprouts if they develop an unusual smell, appearance or texture.
