How to Grow Pea Sprouts

Measure 50–100g of pea seeds into your sprouting jar and cover well with cool water. Soak for 8–12 hours.

Drain and rinse thoroughly, then invert the jar at an angle to allow excess water to drain and air to circulate.

Rinse and drain 2–3 times daily while the peas germinate and grow.

Harvest once the shoots have reached your preferred size. Rinse well and refrigerate.

Full growing instructions are included with every That Leaf sprouting jar kit.

How to Grow Pea Microgreens

Soak the pea seeds for 8–12 hours before sowing.

Spread approximately 200g of soaked seed evenly over a 1020 tray filled with growing medium. Keep the seeds moist while they germinate, then provide light once the shoots begin to establish.

Water as needed and harvest the pea shoots when they are crisp, green and have reached your preferred size.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you grow pea shoots from pea seeds?

Yes. These pea seeds are suitable for growing fresh pea shoots and microgreens at home. They can be grown in a tray for larger leafy shoots or sprouted for a younger harvest.

Do pea seeds need to be soaked before growing?

Yes. Soaking pea seeds for around 8–12 hours helps begin the germination process before they are transferred to a sprouting jar or microgreens tray.

Can I grow these pea seeds as microgreens?

Yes. Pea microgreens are one of the most popular ways to grow these seeds. Use approximately 200g per 1020 tray for a dense crop of fresh pea shoots.

How long do pea microgreens take to grow?

Pea microgreens generally take around 8–14 days to reach harvest, depending on temperature, light and growing conditions.

What do pea shoots taste like?

Broccoli sprouting seeds are intended for growing edible sprouts. Some garden seeds may be treated or intended specifically for growing mature plants, so always choose seeds suitable for sprouting when growing sprouts to eat.

Using approximately 15 to 20 g per batch, one 90 g packet will grow at least 4 full jars of fresh broccoli sprouts.

Yes. Soak your broccoli seeds in cool water for approximately 8 to 12 hours before draining and beginning your regular rinse and drain routine.

Broccoli sprouts are usually ready in around 3 to 6 days. Growing time can vary depending on temperature and growing conditions.

Glucoraphanin is a naturally occurring plant compound found in broccoli and particularly concentrated in young broccoli sprouts. When broccoli sprouts are chewed or chopped, an enzyme called myrosinase helps convert glucoraphanin into another plant compound called sulforaphane. This is one of the reasons broccoli sprouts have become such an interesting area of nutrition research.

Yes. These seeds are suitable for both sprouting and growing as microgreens. Sow them into a tray with growing medium and allow them to continue growing beyond the sprout stage until the young microgreens are ready to harvest. They can also be grown using the That Leaf Microgreens Grow Kit.

Once your broccoli sprouts are ready, keep them refrigerated at 5°C or below. At That Leaf, we keep our sprouts in the sprouting jar with the mesh lid rather than sealing them in an airtight container. While they're in the fridge, rinse and drain them thoroughly once a day and return them to the fridge. Always use clean hands and equipment, rinse thoroughly and discard sprouts if they develop an unusual smell, appearance or texture.
